Positioning the Golgi Apparatus
Ríos et al. (2004) report in this issue that the Golgi protein GMAP-210 is sufficient to confer pericentrosomal positioning and recruits gamma-tubulin and associated microtubule-nucleating ring complex proteins to Golgi membranes. The results raise the possibility that short microtubules emanate from the Golgi to mediate its organization and positioning.

At some point in their lives all cells need to grow and divide. In eukaryotic cells these processes require the delivery of new proteins and lipids from their site of synthesis in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the cell surface. The Golgi apparatus, first visualised under the light microscope in 1898 by Camillo Golgi using a staining method he had developed to study neurons, lies on the rout...
متن کاملAtypical protein kinase C regulates primary dendrite specification of cerebellar Purkinje cells by localizing Golgi apparatus.
Neurons have highly polarized structures that determine what parts of the soma elaborate the axon and dendrites. However, little is known about the mechanisms that establish neuronal polarity in vivo. Cerebellar Purkinje cells extend a single primary dendrite from the soma that ramifies into a highly branched dendritic arbor. We used the zebrafish cerebellum to investigate the mechanisms by whi...
متن کاملPredicting sub-Golgi localization of type II membrane proteins
MOTIVATION Recent research underlines the importance of finegrained knowledge on protein localization. In particular, subcompartmental localization in the Golgi apparatus is important, for example, for the order of reactions performed in glycosylation pathways or the sorting functions of SNAREs, but is currently poorly understood. RESULTS We assemble a dataset of type II transmembrane protein...
متن کاملThe Golgi apparatus: balancing new with old.
Most models put forward to explain cellular processes do not stand the test of time. The 'lucky' few that are able to survive extensive experimental tests and peer critique may eventually become dogmas or paradigms. When this happens, the amount of experimental data required to overturn the paradigm is extensive. To some, such inertia may seem prohibitive to scientific progress but rather, in o...
